7.9 earthquake experience:
i was at damons. it rolled for quite a while - reminded me of being on the boat after a bit. other people were scared and determined to 'get under a door' and some such nonsense. i say you dont have to worry about getting into a secure area until things start shaking off the walls. if a tall vase hasnt moved, youre gonna be ok.
throughout the afternoon i felt four distinct aftershocks. big aftershocks, too. i only remember one that i had to actually sit still and determine if the ground was moving or if i was just shaking my leg. the last of the four actually woke me from a nap.
another blogger felt it, too.

just to defend the "other people" - I would like to point out that if you choose to find the doorway *after* the vase falls, it's probably to late.
nice defense :}
but, of course, i disagree. the ceiling is not going to fall, nor the walls to crumble, until after smaller things (such as vases, small stand-up frames, etc.) are toppeling over.
if a wall falls down either before or at the same time as a vase, then the house is either (1) not built to code, or (2) not built in an area with a lot of earthquakes. otherwise, any building will stand for much longer than a small vase.
