That's because eye doctors like to poke you directly in the eyeball with things. And after they do that, they blow on your eyeball with pokey air.
The most accurate depiction of an eye exam I ever saw was on Rocko's Modern Life, where the doctor stuck a plunger to Rocko's face, sucked out his eyeballs and put 'em under a microscope.
i didnt get the poke, or the scratch (shudder), but i did get the air. and the drops. and the dilation. and soaked three tissues during the process.
