Many companies have tried to pull this particular stupid trick (AT&T, for one), and it's completely unenforceable. A business requiring you to fax a permission form before you can give someone directions to their public store would be laughed out of court.
It's really just a tactic to intimidate the legally inept; if you say something uncomplementary about Company X on your site and include a link to their site, they might send you a scary-looking legal notice which pretends that they're going to sue you unless you take it down.
Of course, it's complete nonsense, as Cory aptly demonstrated with a full-spread of links tucked into a decidedly uncomplementary post. I doubt FastCompany will even bother sending him a takedown notice, because (if they know who Cory is) they'll know they can't get away with it.
Though, if they *did* send you a takedown notice, it would be really funny to replace the direct link with a TinyURL... :D
