internet-less
my computer at work doesnt want to recognize the internet even though it can see the server and all other intranet-type goodness, and even though all of the other stations on the network can see the internet.
thus i am internet-less unless i can sneak on my supervisors computer while she is out of the office (like now).
mean while, anyone want to tell me why my computer doesnt want to browse the internet or connect to the email servers?

adware, spyware, browser hyjack?
virus, mis-configured proxy, no-ip address (accessing local network via netbios), locked-down software firewall, office gnomes?
Gnomes, that's right I forgot about those pesky little bleeders.
Is the email server local or remote? Can you ping Google?
the email server is remote. pinging google or yahoo is a big negatory. firewall is disabled. virus scan gives an a-okay. ip address is automatically assigned and - manually assigning an ip does nothing. i cant see how the proxy could become mis-configured over night on my one computer when i have all the computers configured the same. adware and spyware checks show nothing, but then i cant download the software updates because i cant get online. firefox, netscape, and ie6 all are responding the same.
the big boss man is thinking it may have something to do with our isp bandwith, only allowing so many computers on in the area at a time. but he generally knows slim to none about computers, and his theory doesnt explain why i can turn my computer on and get nothing, but when i turn another computer on after that i can get online.
im opting for the gnomes, myself.
or maybe God is thinking i should be doing some real work instead of blogging.
Well, if you can't ping, that means your packtets aren't making it past something. The trick is figuring out what that Something might be.
Your best friend right now is tracert.exe
try
tracert.exe yahoo.com
if it comes back with a message like "Cannot resolve yahoo.com" then the problem is with your computer's connection to the net.
Check your cables and the Network Connections to make sure that everything is working and enabled.
If everything checks out, try
tracert 66.94.231.99
(that's one of yahoo.com's IP addresses)
If that works, you've probably got a misconfigured DNS entry for your network configuration. Go steal the info from some other computer that works.
If you can resolve, but things only go "so far" then that's where the problem is.
mr jr, i should kiss you.
it was a dns misconfiguration.
hmmm, I wonder if that's what's wrong with my bro in laws pc. Have to check that out tomorrow.
