Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?
I prefer the trade paperbacks because they don’t make my hand hurt as much as the thick mass markets or the stiff hardbacks.

Amazon or brick and mortar?
Brick and Mortar. I love looking at books, although large bookstores like Barnes and Noble overwhelm me with all of the options. But that’s probably because I’m never looking for something specific, just whatever jumps out at me.

Barnes & Noble or Borders?
Nonono. Something small and local, like Gulliver’s in Fairbanks or Tidal Wave in Anchorage.

Bookmark or dogear?
In theory I’m all for supporting bookmarks, but if I don’t have one readily handy (read: within non-stretching arm-reach) I’ll dogear the page. Unless the book was borrowed, then I’ll make an effort to find a bookmark. Recently I’ve been using this special bookmark thingy that Babs sent me ages ago.

Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
Hahaha. Alphabatized? Right. I don’t have many books because I don’t keep them after I read them. A pile of “to be read,” and a pile of “to be sold back for credit.” The rest are separated by… um… subject? Like all of the Bible study stuff is all together, all of the dream interpretation stuff together, the graphic design stuff, the journals, the yearbooks, all next to books of their kind.

Keep, throw away, or sell?
Sell back for credit. So I can get more books. I won’t read them again, so why keep them? There are a few I have kept, but not many.

Keep dust jacket or toss it?
Toss it? Like, remove it and throw it… away? After someone spent all that time designing it? Never.

Read with dust jacket or remove it?
You know, it had never occurred to me that I could take a dust jacket off of a book while I read it and then replace it when I was finished. That is brilliance. But what if it got smooshed? Creased? Wrinkled? Lost??

Short story or novel?
Some short stories are fun, but I prefer something that will take me more than a half hour to finish.

Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Um, wow. People have preferences on these things?

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
How many geek points will I lose if I admit to not having read either?

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Ha. Hahaha. Stop reading when tired? People do this? In high school, I picked up Dolores Claiborne one night just before going to bed. And I read it straight through to the end because the damn thing has no chapter or section breaks.

New or used?
Used. The scrooge in me hates paying for a brand new book, a story I will read and then sell back a week later.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?
Browsing. I’ve gotten to the point where I select books merely by their covers. If it looks nice, I’ll grab it. This is a terrible thing, I’ve heard, and it’s let me down a few times but I figure it’s a good way to broaden my reading experience.

Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?
At night, in bed. Or in the bathtub. Or in a sunny spot in the middle of the afternoon. But mostly at night, in bed, where I can lose bookmarks in the covers.

Stand-alone or series?
What if an author dies before finishing a series? Seriously, does anyone else fret about this? The only series I can remember reading (I mean, besides Sweet Valley Twins back in elementary school) is The Dark Tower, which I absolutely loved and prayed to God that Stephen King wouldn’t die before finishing it.

Favorite children’s book?
Not sure if this counts, being for a pretty young reader, but The Monster At the End of This Book completely rocks. Don’t turn the page!

What are you reading right now?
I just finished Sweet Dream Baby Tuesday night (well, more like Wednesday morning). To

What are you reading next?
Foxfire by Anya Seton, a book I got in the basement of the teeny Seward Library, chosen only for the font used on the book’s spine. I know nothing else about it. Live dangerously, eh?
